Książę w cukierni
PRINCE IN A PASTRY SHOP

A pair of brilliant characters, a pinch of humour and a charm of style – Marek Bieńczyk, the winner of Nike, the most important and esteemed literature award in Poland – serves us a seemingly facetious tale on happiness. "Happiness is nothing but trouble," says the Not-So-Little Prince as he bites into a donut. And he enumerates examples of this trouble, analyzing the reasons for the elusiveness of happiness. For Prickly Pear happiness simply tastes like a cupcake, cream donut, or apple pie.
The book only seems like a humorous philosophical tale. It touches on a fundamental issue, close to everyone, from preschooler to pensioner: the evanescence of happiness, the fact that we do not always know how to see it when it's right in front of us.
Amazing illustrations by Joanna Concejo carry the characters from the pastry shop into
a new dimension: the borderline between walking and sleeping. The book is a masterwork,
a piece of art.

Contemporary music is not haunted, if you are not afraid to open yourself to the sound. The book and CD "Small Instruments are playing Chopin", shows that entering the world of sound experiments - no matter how old you are - every time you give yourself the opportunity to discover what is yet unknown and to experience new sensations.
The key is a toy piano - a surprising object, still a toy, but also a major instrument used by contemporary musicians and composers. These small pianos, in a good number of twenty different specimens, resound on the album by Small Instruments, who played Chopin's compositions in a manner so innovative and inventive, like no one before. The instrument is also a hero of the book - the world's first presentation of a toy piano music culture, which is also a non-committal guide to the space of experiment in contemporary music.

Musical toys and detailed text complement here each other perfectly. Small instruments are the little things of great significance. The surrealist artists reminded us of that, as well as the black masters of jazz and avant-garde visionaries. And besides, how good they are to listen to!

Rafał Księżyk

The abridged story of unusual music written by Dorota Hartwich turns out to be direct and vivid. It disenchants Chopin and avant-garde, restoring the magic to the music itself. Hartwich sets the composers and performers next to the poets, philosophers and painters. In the process, she answers the questions you had asked yourselves since childhood, before you became serious forever: What colors do the tones shimmer with? Can you play the cactus? Does the universe sing? Can the sea be a soloist? What did Chopin laugh at?

If sometimes:

you are fed up with everyday life
you feel that you are missing something
you wish you could escape
you doubt the existence of love and friendship… and dwarfs

…this book is just for you.

An intriguing and rich story for young and old, in which fairy tale subtly intertwines with reality. The book consists of a small gallery of dwarfs’ portraits, drawn by the author with great craft and humour. However, the story runs far deeper, as the portraits reveal the secrets and characteristics of the dwarfs. A book that might have been taken from an old treasure chest, this is a gem that sparkles with gold.

A beautiful story in which the fairy tale world interweaves with the world hidden inside every one of us. It is a story for younger readers who will listen to it with wonder, dreaming of magical encounters, and those grown-up ones who can still picture the different colours of life – both sad and joyful.

A few simple words. Wise and delicate. A non-standard story of love (which never happens to be standard), embellished with non-standard illustrations.

Michał Nogaś

Whispered narrative evokes real pleasure when you read it. It’s a beautiful, mellow and
original though simply fairytale story for those in love, all ages – from twelve to one hundred and twelve.

Roman Kurkiewicz

The most common but most difficult issue – love. In this book it gains the freshness and energy of a spring day. The unaffectedness of its words and images will get at all the readers’ hearts – the youngest, the teenage, the already-grown-up and those whose sensitivity can be only awakened by the memories of their first infatuation.

Mirosław Ratajczak

It’s so difficult to achieve such simplicity of expression. It has been accomplished in this charming book.

Date of publication: 2006

size: 210 x 210 mm
ISBN 83-921483-1-2
age: 2 +

A collaboration between the musician and poet, Lech Janerka, and the painter and stage designer, Tomasz Broda, A Little Gem Tin features thoughtful, humourous text by Janerka, and moving, poetic artwork by Broda. A book for both children and adults alike, Janerka and Broda chose animals as their protagonists. As with the classic fairy tales, the stories can be taken both literally and metaphorically, as wonderfully entertaining tales in their own right, or as allegory for the problems of the contemporary world. A thought-provoking book which entertains as much as it makes the reader ask questions. The CD includes “Elephant”, a song by Lech Janerka.
